MLB umpire saves woman’s life hours before game

Jun 29, 2017, 7:30 AM

Baseball umpires deserve to be desensitized or indifferent in their lives after putting up with constant complaining from players, managers and fans.

It’s a thankless job where every call that’s made will upset somebody.

One certain Major League Baseball umpire doesn’t have that outlook on life, and he took time out of his day to make sure someone was alright when crossing the Roberto Clemente Bridge Wednesday.

It turns out, the person wasn’t alright, and was about to jump off the bridge into the Allegheny River. The umpire, John Tumpane, went to her side and offered the woman a kind word and an offer to go grab lunch.

When she said she was better off just jumping, Tumpane kept by her side and offered words of encouragement, while holding her until police and paramedics arrived.

When first responders arrived and assured him the woman was going to be in good care, he asked for her name and plans to stay in touch with her to make sure she gets the help she needs.

Just hours later, he umpired the Pirates and Rays game at PNC Park.
