Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner is expected to miss three to four weeks with a left knee bruise and a right ankle sprain, the team announced Saturday.

Griner sustained the injury in the fourth quarter of Friday’s game against the Minnesota Lynx. She was taken back to the locker room where she was evaluated by team physicians and underwent x-rays and an MRI. The Mercury said she will be evaluated on an ongoing basis and her status will be updated when appropriate.

The 26-year-old Griner is having an MVP-caliber season and the best of her career.

She’s averaging a league-high 22.3 points and team-high 8.2 rebounds per game. She also leads the WNBA in total blocks at 45, which would make it the fifth straight year she has been at the top of that leaderboard in the league.

The Mercury will miss their best player. They currently sit in third place in the Western Conference with an 11-7 record.
