Descalso hits inside-the-park home run, the D-backs’ third in 2017

Make that three times this season that the Arizona Diamondbacks have circled the bases for inside-the-park home runs.

Credit Daniel Descalso for the latest, just five days after David Peralta hustled around the bases against the Chicago Cubs at Chase Field. Facing right-hander Mike Fiers at Minute Maid Park, Descalso popped an 83-mph changeup into deep right-center, and the ball clanged off the fence and bounced to center.

Astros center fielder Jake Marisnick eventually tracked down the rolling ball but lost his grip on it — with Descalso rounding third by that time, it wasn’t ruled an error but easily allowed the D-back to reach home, putting Arizona ahead 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning.

For the D-backs’ first inside-the-park homer of the year on July 26, it was shortstop Ketel Marte at Chase Field who pocketed a drive into the awkward corner of right field before scoring standing up.

As of Descalso’s inside-the-park homer, the Diamondbacks now have 14 such plays in team history. The three in a single season ties the club record from 2003.

It was Arizona’s first inside-the-park score outside of Chase Field since 2005, when Kelly Stinnett recorded one at San Diego.

And a fun fact to add: the D-backs’ first franchise inside-the-park home run also came in Houston, in the Astrodome on July 21,1999. That was courtesy of Tony Womack.
