Robbie Ray’s first start since being hit on the head by a line drive in late July was a good one for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Ray allowed one run (earned) in five innings, giving up two hits, two walks and striking out nine against the New York Mets Thursday. He was brought off the 10-day disabled list that morning.

The beginning of the first #RayDay in nearly a month was perfect. Ray struck out the first three New York hitters, Juan Lagares, Michael Conforto and Yoenis Cespedes.

In his first four innings, Ray surrendered a maximum of one baserunner each inning. He hit Wilmer Flores in the bottom of the second but retired the next three batters.

His only damage came in the fourth when Cespedes hit a solo home run. Ray calmed down quickly, however, sitting down three consecutive batters after the long ball.

The threat became a bit worse in the fifth when he walked Kevin Plawecki and then Gavin Cecchini singled. The theme continued again, though, as Ray settled and once again would get the following three hitters out.

David Hernandez would come in for Ray in the sixth, ending his first impressive outing back.
