Streak over: D-backs tie for second-longest stretch without trailing

After 97.0 innings, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ streak of consecutive innings without trailing an opponent ended Wednesday when the Los Angeles Dodgers scored a run in the bottom of the first frame to lead 1-0.

Arizona, which won 3-1, goes into the record books tied with the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers for the second-longest streak of its kind and falls just short of the record set by the 1942 New York Yankees, who went 101.0 innings without trailing.

To end the D-backs’ stretch of success, Los Angeles’ Cody Bellinger grounded out to score Chris Taylor from third base in the bottom of the first inning.

At the beginning of the game, the D-backs looked poised to continue their streak of holding a tie or lead.

Their first two batters, David Peralta and Chris Iannetta, both singled and on a wild pitch by Los Angeles pitcher Kenta Maeda advanced to third and second, respectively. But Jake Lamb flew out to deep center — outfielder Joc Peterson caught it against the wall — before J.D. Martinez struck out and Daniel Descalso flew out to strand the two runners in the top of the first.

Soon after, in the top of second inning, Arizona put itself in position to start a new streak.

D-backs starting pitcher Taijuan Walker, who allowed the early RBI to Bellinger, doubled with two outs in the top of the second frame to score A.J. Pollock. The 1-1 tie held through the sixth.

The Diamondbacks added two runs in the seventh, when Adam Rosales doubled home Ketel Marte. Peralta then singled, and Los Angeles intentionally walked Martinez to load the bases with two outs before pitcher Luis Avilan accidentally hit Descalso with a pitch to score Rosales.

While one historic streak ended, another continued: Arizona’s win completed the three-game series sweep and set a franchise record with 13 wins in a row.
