It’s not exactly the way the Arizona Cardinals wanted to start the season.

Bruce Arians’ team failed to fully take advantage of a parade of Detroit Lions miscues in the first half in a 35-23 loss at Ford Field.

The offense didn’t play well, but maybe the most disheartening after-effect of the opener was a pair of costly injuries to two very important players.

Offensive tackle D.J. Humphries exited Sunday’s game at the Lions with an apparent knee injury, initially reported to be a sprain that could keep him out for a few weeks. Running back David Johnson suffered a wrist injury, though there was reportedly no break.

In an interview with Doug and Wolf on 98.7 FM, Arizona’s Sports Station on Monday morning, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim gave an update on Humphries.

“He’ll get an MRI today and just like any of the injuries, I’ll follow up with [trainer] Tom Reed later this morning,” Keim said. “He was walking out of the stadium last night and, who knows. I’ll find out a little bit more of time lost if that’s the case.”

As for Johnson, the news was the same: An MRI is pending and there’s no timetable yet.

“He’s going to get an MRI this morning and I’ll find out a little bit more,” Keim said. “But there was no conclusions based off last night’s information.”

The Cardinals look to avoid an 0-2 start as they head to Indianapolis to face a Colts team with an injury problem their own: Quarterback Andrew Luck is missing time with a shoulder injury.

Keim wouldn’t say definitively whether Humphries or Johnson would be ruled out for the Week 2 matchup.

“There have been times where I felt guys have been injured significantly and they play the following week, and there’s guys where I don’t think it’s much of anything and I’m unfortunately told by the trainer the guy’s going to miss five to six weeks,” Keim said. “It’s hard to forecast that and I leave that up to the doctors and the trainers.”
