Former Redskin Holliday returns to Washington

There’s already been one guarantee made. There won’t be a second — at least, not made by the other player in the trade.

“I don’t do that. I’m glad he gave us that bulletin board material,” Vonnie Holliday said, referring to Tim Hightower’s ‘we’re going to win this game’ statement earlier in the week. Holliday added, “We’ll put it up. If anybody needs it that’s added incentive but I’m not that kind of guy.”

Holliday and Hightower were dealt for one another near the start of training camp on August 1. In fact, Holliday had already begun practicing with the Redskins before he headed west. And even though he was only in Washington for the 2010 season, he’s got fond memories and more importantly, every intention of showing his former team what it gave up.

“That’s the competitor in you,” he stated. “The team that let you go, you’re not there anymore. The guys that you practiced with and shared a lot of experiences with, you want to beat them. I mean it’s like family. Anytime you play against your brother, your cousin, whoever it is you want to win. So going back in there it’s the same thing. I want to go in there and get after them and have that opportunity to talk about it for the rest of the season or for the rest of my life really.”

Holliday has been in this position before. A veteran of 14 NFL seasons, the Cardinals are the sixth team he’s played for so lining up against former teammates is not new. However, this time around just six weeks have passed since switching uniforms.

“Only when I left Green Bay, going to Kansas City, we went back and played Green Bay in that Hall of Fame game but you had the whole offseason. This is a little over a month ago. It’s going to be different. I’m still looking forward to it. Still talk to those guys back there. We still talk, text, tweet everything back and forth. Some good guys over there, made some good relationships. It’s going to be lasting but on Sunday they’re the enemy as I am to them and we’ve got to get after each other.”

Might that include some verbal sparring?

“There will be,” Holliday answered. “I’m the kind of guy that gets going. If I get going and you start talking to me, the next thing you know there’s a lot of jawing going back and forth. We had a lot of fun in practice so I expect the same thing in the game.”

Both the Cardinals and Redskins won their first game. Arizona 28-21 vs. Carolina while Washington beat NFC East rival New York Giants, 28-14 at home.

“It’s going to be a tough test. They’re feeling really good about themselves right now and what they were able to do the first game. They’re riding pretty high. We got to go in there and play a much smarter football game than we played this past weekend, but still be physical and fast and come out (of) there with a victory.”
