Mercury’s Griner, Taurasi make the 2017 All-WNBA Second Team
The WNBA announced its All-WNBA teams Friday and both Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi received Second Team honors.
It was a record-breaking year for both members of the Mercury. Griner averaged 21.9 points and 2.50 blocks per game, becoming the first player in WNBA history to lead the league in both categories in one season, while Taurasi broke WNBA records for points, passing Tina Thompson’s 7,488-point record, and three-point shots made, passing Katie Smith’s record of 906.
In her fifth season in the league, the 26-year-old Griner has developed into one of the best all-around players. Thanks in large part to her ability to block the basketball at will, the Houston native has already won the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year award twice. She also took home the WNBA’s 2017 Peak Performance Award this season.
For Taurasi, she finished the regular season averaging 17.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. She also made 96 of her 250 three-point attempts for a .384 shooting percentage.
The two were also selected to the WNBA All-Star team this year.
