Cardinals’ David Johnson wants to return, but not certain of timeline

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson, recovering from a wrist injury he suffered in Week 1, is anxious to get back on the field.

The Cardinals are probably looking forward to having him back, too.

So are fantasy owners.

“I’m hearing that the most,” he said of fantasy football. “Social media, I can’t really go on too much, especially when I first got hurt. The first couple weeks, I wasn’t on social media a lot, just because fans were letting me know how mad they were or how disappointed they were that I wasn’t able to be on the field and wasn’t able to help out their team.”

A real-life football team has gone without the All-Pro running back, eventually making a move to acquire Adrian Peterson in Johnson’s absence. But Johnson could potentially make a return this season, should the Cardinals choose to designate him for return from IR.

“I hope I do get back, but I really don’t know,” he said. “The wrist is a complicated limb and it’s tough to say, just because I still have this cast on. I haven’t even started rehab so I don’t know yet.”

The 25-year-old led the league with 2,118 yards from scrimmage and 20 touchdowns last season and was a Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro selection. In Week 1 of this season, he had 23 rushing yards on 11 carries and was 6-for-9 on pass targets with 67 receiving yards.

He left that game in the third quarter.

Johnson spoke further on the injury in an interview with 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Mike Jurecki on Thursday evening while at an event in Scottsdale for SOHO. You can see the interview in its entirety at the top of this page.
