D-backs, MLB teams release New Era 2018 spring training hats

MLB and New Era Caps on Monday released the official 2018 spring training hat designs that, in some cases, include new logos.

As far as the Arizona Diamondbacks are concerned, there won’t be wholesale changes.

Like the 2017 spring training hats, the D-backs’ alternate fang-forward snake logo will appear on a black cap. Unlike last season, the brim of the cap will be black instead of red.

Here’s a look at the Diamondbacks’ 2017 spring training hat, sported by manager Torey Lovullo, as a comparison.

What’s most new has to do with the hat design and materials used.

The logo, for example, is no longer embroidered but is made of “beveled rubber.” The caps are the lightest in history, New Era says.

“We worked tirelessly with our internal Product Management team and consulted with a handful of MLB players and Club equipment managers to create a cap that performs better on the field of play,” Tony DeSimone, Baseball Business Unit Director at New Era said in a press release, per SportsLogos.net. “We also made sure to add an on-trend look and feel that players and baseball fans everywhere will enjoy.”

Other teams are changing up their style more aggressively than the Diamondbacks.

Take the Colorado Rockies, for example. They’re going away from the team colors of purple and honoring the Colorado state flag.

The Orioles are taking a revamped version of their mascot to the spring training fields.

The new #MLB caps will do away with embroidered team and league logos, they will instead now be a “beveled rubber badge”
