LISTEN: Herm Edwards, ASU Head Coaching Candidate

Former NFL head coach and current TV analyst Herm Edwards is reportedly set to become Arizona State’s next head football coach pending approval from school president Dr. Michael Crow, per Chris Karpman of SunDevilSource.com.

Edwards most recent and only coaching experience in college football was as San Jose State’s defensive backs coach from 1987-89. His most recent coaching experience was as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006-2008.

It was initially reported by 98.7 FM Arizona Sports Station’s Paul Calvisi that Edwards was a serious candidate for the job before ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Edwards would have an interview with Vice President of University Athletics Ray Anderson this weekend.

Karpman said Crow is the key as to what will happen this weekend in regards to Edwards potentially being hired on Burns & Gambo Wednesday.

“Anderson is already totally sure he wants to do this,” Karpman said. He added that Crow is on an international trip and will be back when Edwards is in Tempe.

“This has been in the works from his perspective,” he said. “They have a great relationship. It’s more about the fact that Crow is a partner in the decision and really has final approval. Anderson even said that in the meeting with the press on Sunday.”

Karpman said Anderson has been rallying support for Edwards behind the scenes.

Edwards joined 98.7 FM’s Doug & Wolf Wednesday morning to discuss the possibility of becoming the program’s next head coach.

“I think I owe (Anderson) a conversation where we can communicate and sit down and talk.

“It’s for both of us because we have so much respect for each other. I think you have to respect people in life. You owe them a conversation, let’s sit down and talk.”

Edwards would be replacing Todd Graham, who was fired Sunday after six seasons in Tempe.

He said he’d be willing to retain ASU’s two coordinators.

“I don’t know if they’re Todd Graham’s guys. They’re football guys,” he said. “Football guys are married to football, in the end. You keep good coaches.

“You don’t get rid of them because they’re somebody else’s guy. Coaches belong to football.”

He is not intimidated by his lack of recruiting experience.

“Recruiting doesn’t scare me. I’m not worried about walking into a parent’s home and telling them exactly what we’re going to do to develop their young man. You think I’m worried about talking to a mom or dad?” Edwards said.

Edwards, still working as a broadcaster on ESPN Thursday morning, was asked about the situation by co-host Randy Scott.
