Sherdrick Bonner to return to Arizona and retire a Rattler

Jul 15, 2014, 1:10 AM | Updated: 1:10 am

One of the best players in Arizona Rattlers history will return to the team for one more day.

The Rattlers announced Monday that Sherdrick Bonner, who quarterbacked the team the team for 14 seasons and led it to championships in 1994 and 1997, will sign a one-day contract so he can retire with the franchise. The ceremony will be at 3 p.m. on July 20 before the Rattlers host the Portland Thunder at US Airways Center.

“I am grateful to come back home and officially be retired as a Rattler,” said Bonner. “I love Phoenix and it broke my heart to leave and play elsewhere. I never wanted to wear anything but black, copper, and teal.”

Bonner played with the Rattlers from 1993 to 2007. He signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Rush after being released by Arizona, but was released after just one season with the team.

In his career, he completed nearly 62 percent of his passes for 42,246 yards with 855 touchdowns and 124 interceptions.

“Sherdrick is a major part of the Rattlers history and to see his name in the books retiring from another team just didn’t seem right,” said Rattlers president Joe Windham. “With this year being the 20th anniversary of the Rattlers and Bonner’s first ArenaBowl Championship in 1994, we felt it was perfect timing.”
