Beanie Wells improving, Cardinals hope to have him back

Beanie Wells sat out against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday as a precautionary move to prevent him from doing any further damage to his injured hamstring.

Some people say Wells should have toughed it out and played, but the Cardinals thought they would be better off having a healthy Wells in their next matchup against the New York Giants.

“The reason he didn’t play last week was so that he would be able to play this week,” head coach Ken Whisenhunt told reporters after practice Wednesday. “That’s our plan; hopefully it pans out.”

Wells sat out due to a hamstring injury. Without him the Cardinals rushed for 90 total yards on 28 carries in the loss.

“If he doesn’t have any setbacks hopefully we’ll be okay for the game,” Whisenhunt said.

Through the first three weeks of the season the Cardinals have come to depend on the running back as a cornerstone to the offense.

That hasn’t always been said of Wells, who has shown a lot of improvement in his third NFL season.

Wells currently is ranked eighth in the NFL in rushing yards per game and is sixth overall in yards per attempt at 5.7.

“He’s in a good place right now, I think he will get more and more work as the week progresses and hopefully be ready Sunday,” Whisenhunt said. “We could certainly use him.”
