The Cardinals have promoted tight end Gabe Holmes from the practice squad to the active roster as Jermaine Gresham was ruled out for Sunday’s game due to an illness.
Gresham had 29 catches for 294 yards this season and the eight year veteran was expected to have a major role in the offense. He ranks 29th league-wide among tight ends in receiving yards and 24th in receptions this season.
The Cardinals will now carry three tight ends into the contest at FedEx Field in Maryland.
Rookie Ricky Seals-Jones has emerged in recent weeks as a reliable target for quarterback Blaine Gabbert. Also Troy Niklas has eight catches on the season from the tight end position.
Cardinals tight ends have recorded 5 receiving touchdowns this season and Seals-Jones, Niklas, and Holmes hope to solidify the position against the Redskins 24th ranked total defense.
While Holmes earns the promotion the Cardnials, also announced the release of running back Bronson Hill.
