Drew Brees gets a bad rap

Jan 13, 2014, 6:39 PM | Updated: 6:40 pm

Drew Brees did not play well in the Saints’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks over the weekend. This is not an indictment; Brees is one of the best quarterbacks in the league. And that’s part of the problem.

We’re not used to seeing Brees struggle to complete passes. We’re not used to seeing Brees throw as many picks as touchdown passes. We’re not used to seeing Jimmy Graham struggle to make an impact on a football game. But we saw it this postseason.

Brees has battled the notion, dare I say stigma, that he struggles in cold weather games. Since the Saints play in a dome and cold weather games typically occur most in the postseason, the belief is Brees is not a good road Q in January.

Based on what we’ve seen from Brees this January, that perception is not going to change any time soon. In two games, Brees posted his lowest playoff QBR of his career (81.9). And although he wasn’t the reason why the Saints lost at Century Link Field in the Divisional round, he wasn’t the reason why the Saints beat the Eagles in the Wild Card round, either.

Although it’s accurate to question Brees’ cold weather constitution, I don’t think it’s very fair. What QB with a large sample size is not going to throw better in a dome than in freezing temperatures, wind, rain, sleet and snow? I promise you, Tom Brady’s numbers would be better if he played the majority of his games in a dome! Peyton Manning’s numbers were better in a dome than they were outdoors.

The best thing Brees could do is admit he’s better in the dome than he is in cold weather games, get on with being one of the best quarterbacks in the league and be done with it. And then follow it up by saying, “Who isn’t?”

Maybe then the media will get off it…

Tiger Woods is the Lord of the Headlines

Tiger Woods is still dominating headlines but the golf world has moved on. In terms of production, this is a man that hasn't been relevant in years but whatever he does cameras, microphones and interest follows him like TMZ on Travolta.

Adrian Peterson’s perdition

There's a ton of subterfuge swirling in and around the Adrian Peterson affair. Rumors and innuendo seem to be the currency used to build arguments as to where Minnesota's talented back is headed. So let me add to the speculation:

The curious case of Chris Borland

Good for Chris Borland. He made an immediate decision through a long-term lens and he seems to be at peace walking away from the game he loves and played so vigorously.

The threat of Los Angeles is a powerful one for the NFL

The NFL has always been a progressive sports league but what they have done with the L.A. market may be their masterpiece.

LeBron

Recently, LeBron James tweeted something out that clearly referenced Kevin Love. He implored the social media populace to stop trying to "FIT-OUT" and start trying to "FIT-IN."
