The Phoenix Suns have guaranteed the contract for guard Isaiah Canaan, keeping him in Phoenix for the remainder of the season, 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro confirmed Sunday.

However, an MRI showed that Canaan will be out 7-10 days due to an adductor strain, interim coach Jay Triano confirmed Sunday prior to the Suns’ game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Canaan was signed with the Suns back in December on a hardship waiver due to injuries to guards Devin Booker and Davon Reed.

After impressive performances by Canaan, most notably his 17-point performance against Dallas, Suns general manager Ryan McDonough spoke highly about the 26-year-old guard, saying that they wanted to make him a part of the team going forward.

“I think with what Isaiah’s done, we should plan on having him in Phoenix for the rest of the year, if not longer,” he said.

Canaan was reportedly signed to a minimum deal near the end of December, as the Suns waived guard Mike James who had just been signed to a minimum deal after his 45-day, two-way contract expired.

According to 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Craig Grialou, Canaan’s cap number is $997,547, a prorated amount since he joined the Suns in December.

Canaan has averaged 9.1 points, 4.5 assists and 1.1 steals this season with the Suns.
