Whisenhunt and Kolb relationship still growing

The anticipation that was brought with the offseason acquisition of Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb may have over shadowed the fact it will take time for the new quarterback to live up to the hype.

“We’re asking him to do some things in our offense that he hasn’t done before,” coach Whisenhunt told reporters after practice on Monday. “I don’t know to the degree of what he did in Philly, but I know it’s different.”

Learning the new system will take time; this has become not necessarily an excuse for the new quarterback, but a constant reminder following each game during the team’s current three game slide.

“I’m not going to tell you it’s a work in progress because I’m tired of saying it,” Kolb told reporters after practice on Monday. “I’m just ready to get it done and win some games.”

Kolb has shown flashes of being a top quarterback, as well as flashes of a career back-up quarterback.

“Kevin missed some things and that happens with quarterbacks, but he’s working through running our offense and getting comfortable with that,” said Whisenhunt.

Kolb has not played very well as of late, perhaps he set his standard too high with his best performance coming in the first game of the season, when he threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns.

Since week one, however, Kolb hasn’t thrown for 300 yards and has just three touchdowns to his four interceptions, but he won’t shy away from responsibility.

“We have to get better as a group and it always starts with the quarterback,” said Kolb. “That’s the way we’ll approach it.”

One thing for sure is the quarterback and head coach seem to be comfortable with each other in the young relationship. Whisenhunt continues to provide faith for the man under center.

“We’re going to continue to grow with Kevin as we are with our whole offense,” said Whisenhunt. “We’ll get better and better each week is what our hopes are.”
