Bickley Blast: Chip Kelly is the most intriguing coach in the NFL

Hail to the new chief. He is Chip Kelly. And he needed one game to become the most intriguing coach in the NFL.
Everything that sets him apart was on display in the first half of the Eagles’ win on Monday night: 26 points in 30 minutes, 53 plays by the offense, 21 first downs, 100 yards each for DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy.
The onslaught was so exhilarating that Eagles players acted like a bunch of college kids, hugging each other and their new head coach.
The read-option is one thing. This was the dawn of fast-break basketball in football. This could be even better than what Kelly did at Oregon. In the NFL, he can actually talk to his quarterback via headset.
Yet everything that threatens to undermine Chip Kelly was on display on the second half, when his team was gassed. Jackson had zero catches in the second half. The Redskins used a series of turnovers to get back into the game. Can this offense be sustained for 60 minutes without serious breakdown or injury? Time will tell.
For now, Kelly is the hot new coach in football. Unlike Bill Belichick’s and Nick Saban’s brand of dominance, Kelly’s philosophy is not to bore and bludgeon you to death.
That is a refreshing change. And I can’t wait to see how a copy-cat league will react if Kelly brings a Super Bowl to Philadelphia.
