Green: I’m looking forward to November 3rd

I can’t wait for November 3rd.

That Wednesday I will wake up after a long night of
election coverage at KTAR, look out my window and realize
the world is still there.

Sure, the events of the night before will matter. And yes, odds are I will not care for some who are elected, be in favor of some bills that passed or be pleased with the overall direction of the country. But, none of that will matter so much, because this awful election season will finally be over.

Think about it: As we either cast early ballots or wait
for Tuesday, we basically get to choose between three
equally disappointing groups. We have:

A. A Tea Party that is full of complaints but empty
when it comes to solutions, a group that seems to search
for the most unqualified and most radical candidates
around. Religious zealots? Yes please. Hypocrites abound
in these parts.

B. A Republican party that has no direction but
contains a willingness to do whatever it takes to win an
election – even if it means hurting the country.
They’ve been on the offensive since Obama won in 2008,
really limiting what has been accomplished. Back room
deals happen because Republicans won’t let anything pass,
as their main goal has been to make the President look
bad.

C. A Democratic party that thinks I’m too dumb to
think for myself, that it knows what’s best for me better
than I do. Desperate to hold off Republicans and keep the
Democratic majority, President Obama has done a great job
of tripping over himself while trying to give his party a
boost. Bring the country together? Hardly. At this point
the battle lines have been drawn, and not in the sand.

The biggest local race is for governor, and even that one
seems to already be wrapped up.

Jan Brewer has a ton of support these days, though
it’s easy to forget how little people cared for her until
she signed her name to that pesky SB 1070. While nobody
would ever confuse Brewer for a genius (though she has did so much for us), that simple stroke of a pen probably won her the election. So what if, at the end of the day, SB 1070 has accomplished nothing? The simple illusion that she was trying to do something about the border seems to be enough for most Arizonans. Pre-SB 1070 she was a long shot to even make it out of the Republican primary, and now she is the favorite to win the whole election.

And you know why she is? Fear. Oh, and also because Terry
Goddard is not exactly an exciting candidate. That
shouldn’t be a surprise to many; Democrats have a knack
for finding underwhelming candidates who can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, in this case beating an
incumbent who seems to lose ground every time they speak.
Does the 2004 Presidential election ring a bell?

This election season has left each side demonizing the
other when, really, they all just want control. At some
point the issues were put on the backburner, replaced at
the front by witches, open borders, amnesty and ailments.
The economy is bad? Blame illegal immigrants. Don’t like
your taxes? Obama’s Socialist agenda is the problem, as
he’s trying to take away our freedoms. We must get rid of
him and all liberals because all they want to do is ruin
our country. Yeah, that’s it; they want us all to suffer.
Of course, we can’t vote Conservatives in, as they’ll want the wealthy to have all the money so the middle class remains poor. Really, this entire time platforms have been vague while criticisms precise.

At this point people seem to be running largely on the
platform of “hey, I’m not them.” And why not, it worked
for Democrats in 2008. But, sooner or later American
voters will realize they are them, and only at that point is positive change a real possibility. The good news, though, is things will surely get better once the elections are done. Nobody will be trying to scare a vote out of you, so we’ll have less to be afraid of.

I’m reminded of a scene from the Simpsons, where
Marge, talking to homer, says something to the effect of,
“You know, it’s easy to criticize,” to which Homer replies “It’s fun too.” Problem is until someone – anyone – comes up with practical solutions we’ll be nothing more than a washing machine stuck in a failure cycle.
