Bill Walton goes in search for mushrooms before tipoff, drops knowledge

Hunting for mushrooms before tipoff?

Just another day in the life of sportscaster Bill Walton.

Before the matchup between UCLA and Oregon got underway Saturday, Walton decided to take a trip into the woods of the Pacific Northwest to find some fungi.

“Reindeers eat these?” Walton asked. “What do they taste like?”

As he asks, you can see the look on Walton’s face of “I want to try this.”

After getting the green light — and being told the mushrooms were crunchy and bitter — Walton didn’t just go for a tiny bite, he dove in, giving his best impression of a reindeer.

He took what he learned to the hardwood — like he usually does.

“I have found that mushrooms only help you,” Walton told the world and his colleague Dave Pasch. “We went into the laboratory, we mixed everything up, we looked under the microscope, we saw it all. There are basically three million species of mushrooms around the world.

“Here in the state of Oregon we have the Humongous Fungus, because remember fungus is singular, fungi is plural.”

But even then, Walton wasn’t done.

“More mushrooms, no mushroom clouds,” Walton said before explaining Oregon’s wildlife refuges, state parks and national parks. “Sixty percent of Oregon is all public lands, the way it should be. The fifth-most in our great country.”

Thanks for the knowledge, Bill.

And in case you forgot.
