Should Patrick Peterson have been the Pro Bowl MVP?

Patrick Peterson had one interception for the Arizona Cardinals in 2017.

Mostly because, as one of the game’s top shutdown cornerbacks, he rarely gets tested on NFL Sundays.

But the Pro Bowl isn’t your normal NFL Sunday. In this year’s edition, Peterson’s seventh career appearance in the league’s pre-Super Bowl showcase, he snagged two picks. It wasn’t enough, however, as the AFC rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to win 24-23 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

Peterson’s first pick came in the second quarter when he thwarted a red-zone chance by the AFC when by stepping in front of an Alex Smith pass intended for tight end Delanie Walker in the end zone.

In the fourth quarter, Peterson picked off Oakland’s Derek Carr, who tried a long pass intended for Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen. The play temporarily preserved a 23-17 lead for the NFC.

Yes, the mood of the game is a bit lax, and so too may be the MVP voting. This year’s honor went to Denver linebacker Von Miller, who had three tackles, and a strip sack.

Peterson felt a little slighted after the game.

The perennial Pro Bowler did also tweet about his love for the game, despite the fact that he feels underappreciated.

Peterson was apparently thrilled with Arizona’s choice of new head coach Steve Wilks, who employed a blitzing, high-risk, high-reward defense as a coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2017. One would speculate it would lead to a lot more chances to accumulate stats for Peterson, who has lacked in that area for the past couple seasons due to a lack of passes coming his way.
