Dodgers catcher injures ankle celebrating Josh Beckett’s no-hitter

May 26, 2014, 10:46 PM | Updated: May 27, 2014, 12:25 am

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis is the newest member of the Bill Gramatica club.

As Josh Beckett completed a historic no-hitter Sunday, Ellis injured his ankle in the on-field celebration, ESPN Los Angeles writer Mark Saxon reports.

Unlike Gramatica, however, Ellis was not directly responsible for a transcendent play that led to jubilation in the first place.

Ellis wasn’t even behind the plate to catch the final pitch in the Dodgers’ 6-0 blanking of the Philadelphia Phillies — Drew Butera was. As players were jumping around in a congratulatory huddle surrounding Beckett, Ellis landed on Butera’s catcher’s mask on the ground, resulting in a sprained ankle.

NBC Sports says Ellis had just returned from a knee injury 10 days ago, and now he’s heading back to the disabled list with the ankle injury.
