CBS News renames Derek Jeter

Jul 16, 2014, 2:35 AM | Updated: 4:01 pm

In baseball, it’s hard to be more credentialed than Derek Jeter.

Five World Series championships, 14 All-Star games, a Rookie of the Year award, five Gold Gloves and captain of the one of the biggest sports franchises on the planet, the New York Yankees.

Jeter is one five men to join the 3,000-hit club since 2000 and, by season’s end, he’ll likely have more hits than anyone who has played the game since Pete Rose.

This season, and this All-Star week, specifically, Jeter has been ubiquitous in the media. Flashbacks to some of his iconic moments have been shown, interviews have aired, awesome commercials have debuted. And, Tuesday, in his final moment as an All-Star, Target Field gave him a heartfelt standing ovation.

But all of that couldn’t stop CBS News from calling the larger-than-life, pinstripe-wearing shortstop “Michael Jeter.”

Yes, Michael.

How does that happen?

The tweet was soon taken down and the follow-up contained a big “whoops.” Yeah.

Anyway, a heartfelt “congratulations” to the Michael Jeters of the world, who got tweeted about by one of the biggest news services in the nation.
