Red Mountain High School senior Brittani Rusnak was named as the Character Counts Scholarship winner for demonstrating outstanding moral character through an act, deed or community involvement.
Rusnak received a $10,000 college scholarship at the fourth annual Character Counts award banquet presented by Parker and Sons Heating, Cooling, Plumbing and Electrical, and 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
The swimmer battles transverse myelitis, an auto-immune disorder, but used her disease to find a way to help others.
Rusnak started “Pajamas for Patients,” which over the past five years has purchased and raised donations to provide 1,500 pajama sets to the Phoenix Children’s hospital.
“I have been able to find hope in a situation where you can’t,” she told ArizonaSports.com in December. “I want to help my patients find that hope and just be able to reach out to anyone that I can through my story and just help them with whatever they are going through.”
Rusnak was one of 10 finalists nominated for the scholarship this year.
