Arizona State has showed a unique ability throughout the season to climb back into games despite a double-digit deficit.

While they managed to do the same against Oregon State, two late fouls allowed the Beavers to secure the 79-75 win on Saturday night.

The Sun Devils started strong in the first half, jumping out to an early 10-2 lead. But numerous fouls allowed the Beavers to eventually climb back into the contest and take the lead midway through the first half.

In the Sun Devils’ loss to Oregon on Thursday, senior guard Tra Holder and freshman forward Romello White failed to score any points. Instead, the Sun Devils were led by senior guard Shannon Evans II and freshman guard Remy Martin.

The duo combined for 40 points to keep Arizona State within striking distance of the Ducks.

Against Oregon State, however, it was Holder who once again found a rhythm and led the Sun Devils.

Holder was 7-of-15 from the field and 3-of-6 from behind the arc, scoring 23 points along with one assist on the night.

Senior guard Kodi Justice was Arizona State’s second-highest scorer with 12 points. White, Evans II and Martin all finished with single-digit point totals.

Oregon State took advantage of Arizona State’s lack of a rhythm on offense, extending its 36-30 halftime lead to 59-44 with just over nine minutes remaining.

But, the Sun Devils never quit.

A 10-1 run closed the gap to just six points with six minutes remaining. The Beavers’ lead continued to shrink, eventually leading to a tie game after Evans II hit a deep 3-pointer with just over a minute remaining.

With 36 seconds left White fouled Beavers forward Drew Eubanks who then connected on both free throws to once again give Oregon State the lead.

On the Sun Devils’ next possession, Justice missed a go-ahead 3-pointer, resulting in an Oregon State rebound and Arizona State foul. Beavers’ Ethan Thompson hit both free throws to give Oregon State the 79-75 win.

Arizona State shot 43.6 percent from the field and 36 percent from behind the arc. The Sun Devils now stand at 19-9 on the year and 7-9 in Pac-12 play with two regular season games remaining.
