Arizona State sophomore receiver John Humphrey will miss the 2018 season after suffering an Achilles tear at spring practice on Tuesday, coach Herm Edwards told reporters on Thursday.

Harvey figured to challenge for a prominent role for the Sun Devils in Edwards’ first year.

He flashed as a freshman in the 2017 opener, hauling in seven catches for 123 yards and a touchdown against New Mexico State. But Humphrey suffered a knee injury in the Week 2 game against San Diego State, missed four games in a row and returned with limited success, only making six more catches for 54 more yards the rest of the year.

The 5-foot-11 wideout was the fifth-leading receiver for ASU in 2017.

Arizona State has the bodies to survive the blow, as it returns the four players who produced more yardage than Humphrey.

Junior N’Keal Harry (1,142 receiving yards in 2017), junior Kyle Williams (763 yards) and redshirt sophomore Frank Darby remain targets for expected starting quarterback Manny Wilkins. Junior Jalen Harvey (558 yards) is also back but has been practicing as a safety.
