The Arizona Coyotes scored the strangest goal you’ll see all season Thursday night in Carolina.
With the puck going behind the Hurricanes’ net in the mid-first period, Carolina goaltender Cam Ward skated to the area to handle the puck and play it out.
As an overhead camera angle showed, Ward left the area without the puck and assumed it was somewhere else.
Little did Ward know, the puck was in his own right skate. In going through his own motions to protect his net, he actually skated the puck over the line for a Coyotes goal.
The linesman went to remove the puck from Ward’s skate and the replay review confirmed that Ward had scored on himself.
Arizona defenseman Alex Goligoski was the player to play the puck behind the net, so he was rewarded with the goal, his 10th of the season.
It was a lucky and much-needed break for the Coyotes, as they gave up two goals inside the first five minutes on the road.
