In town for its 25th anniversary, the Professional Bull Riders organization paid a visit Thursday to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields.
PBR, in an ironic fashion, challenged the D-backs bullpen and other position players to outweigh Beaver Creek Beau, a 1,985-pound bucking bull and the son of a famous PBR bull named Bodacious.
Relievers Archie Bradley, Andrew Chafin, T.J. McFarland, Randall Delgado and Brad Boxberger, along with starter Zack Godley accepted the challenge. Infielders Chris Owings and Kristopher Negron as well as catcher John Ryan Murphy joined the D-backs’ pitchers in the pen.
The nine players piled into a pen to weigh in, totaling 1,940 pounds, 45 under Beau.
Chafin admitted that he would like to ride a bull himself when his playing career is over — just not one of that size.
“I’ll ride a little one that is broke maybe,” he said. “Down the road after ball and stuff that is one thing I would like to do is ride a bull at some point, but nothing too crazy.”
Beau’s handlers said he was one of the toughest bulls the PBR has to offer, making it tough to imagine just how hard it is for riders to handle the bull’s massive frame.
“I think the size of the bull overall is not that impressive,” Godley said. “It’s the fact that one guy has to jump on and ride him for eight seconds. It shows just how much talent these guys actually have.”
