The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed outfielder Steven Souza Jr. and reliever Randall Delgado on the 10-day disabled list, the team announced Monday.
Battling a left oblique strain, Delgado starts the season on the DL after pitching in nine games this spring with a 3.00 ERA and 1.11 WHIP, striking out 14 batters.
Souza’s placement on the DL comes after an MRI showed he had suffered a right pectoral strain while diving for a line drive Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants.
He is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks with the injury, but Souza said Thursday the diagnosis could have been worse.
“I was obviously in a little bit of pain (last night) and you never know what to think in those situations,” he said. “But after this morning, we got some good news that I won’t be down too long.”
Acquired by the D-backs on Feb. 20 as part of a three-team trade, Souza batted .222 (6-for-27) with two home runs and seven RBI in 11 spring training games.
The D-backs also announced Monday they had reassigned pitchers Kris Medlen and Michael Blazek, outfielder Rey Fuentes and infielder Kristopher Negron to Minor League camp. They also released catcher Chris Herrmann from the roster.
Following the moves, the D-backs roster stands at 40 players, with 28 in Major League camp.
