The Arizona Diamondbacks traded cash considerations to the Baltimore Orioles and acquired right-handed pitcher Stefan Crichton on Monday.
Crichton, who was optioned to Triple-A Reno, takes the place of outfielder Yasmany Tomas on the D-backs’ 40-man roster. Tomas was outrighted to Reno on Monday, removing him from the roster.
Tomas was the second-highest paid player on the D-backs but didn’t make the Opening Day roster despite starting outfielder Steven Souza Jr. beginning the season on the disabled list. Arizona optioned Tomas to Triple-A Reno before the regular season and told him to improve his defense.
Tomas has three years and close to $46 million remaining on his contract.
Crichton, 26, has one year of MLB experience and made eight appearances for Baltimore last season, allowing 11 runs and 26 hits in 12.1 innings (8.03 ERA). He had eight strikeouts and four walks.
In the minor leagues for Triple-A Norfolk last season, Crichton went 7-2 with a 3.02 ERA in 29 appearances. He pitched 47.2 innings, allowing 16 runs in 47.2 innings with 50 strikeouts to 11 walks.
