D-backs’ Souza takes at-bats, wants to return for next homestand

Apr 9, 2018, 7:16 PM

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo gave an update Monday on the status of outfielder Steven Souza Jr.

Souza hit in an extended spring game on Monday.

“He had seven at-bats, he had two home runs and he had a great day,” Lovullo said in a video from Fox Sports Arizona. “He threw out to about 105 feet and just felt some general soreness in his shoulder so we had a follow-up MRI, which is to be expected, so we determined that we are just going to shut him down for the next couple of days.

“This is part of the process. I do not consider this a setback whatsoever.”

Lovullo added that Souza will not be with the team from Thursday to Saturday due to a family matter.

Per Fox Sports Arizona, Souza said the biggest obstacle is throwing the baseball.

“I’m shooting to hopefully be back by the beginning of the next homestand,” he said.

The D-backs return to Chase Field on April 17 against the San Francisco Giants and will play six straight days at home.

Souza was placed on the DL after an MRI showed he had suffered a right pectoral strain while diving for a line drive on March 21 against the Giants.

Acquired by the D-backs on Feb. 20 as part of a three-team trade, Souza batted .222 (6-for-27) with two home runs and seven RBI in 11 spring training games.
