Armen Gilliam, 47, the former No. 2 overall pick of the Phoenix Suns in 1987 died of a heart attack Wednesday.
Gilliam collapsed while playing basketball and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
“The Hammer,” played in the 1987 Final Four with UNLV prior to being drafted by the Suns.
Gilliam played two seasons in Phoenix, before he was traded to Charlotte for Kurt Rambis, where he averaged 15 points per game.
He also played with the Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Utah Jazz.
In his 13 year career, Gilliam averaged 13.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
