The Arizona Cardinals signed free agent tight end Beau Sandland to a one-year contract, the team announced on Monday.

The 2016 seventh-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers joins a thin tight end unit that includes fourth-year pro Gabe Holmes and second-year pro Ricky Seals-Jones, who recorded 12 catches for 201 yards and three touchdowns after going undrafted in 2017.

Sandland, 25, has not made an NFL game appearance and spent the first portion of his rookie year on the Panthers’ practice squad. After Carolina waived him in November 2016, the Green Bay Packers added Sandland to their practice squad but he was released from their injured reserved list last August.

With the Panthers, Sandland played under Arizona head coach Steve Wilks, who was then Carolina’s defensive defensive backs coach and assistant head coach.

Last week while attempting to fill in the holes at tight end, the Cardinals signed free agent tight end Bryce Williams to a one-year deal.

Arizona lost tight end Troy Niklas, who this offseason signed with the Patriots in free agency.

Entering the 2018 season, veteran Jermaine Gresham could remain out a significant period after he tore his Achilles in the 2017 season finale.

The Cardinals open mini-camp on Tuesday.
