Cardinals head into Day 2 of NFL Draft with long-term QB, holes to fill

The Arizona Cardinals will enter Day 2 of the NFL Draft with something most thought they wouldn’t have: a long-term quarterback.

The Cardinals traded up from No. 15 to 10th with the Oakland Raiders to select UCLA’s Josh Rosen.

Rosen fills a notable hole in the roster as the team’s long-term option at quarterback, but there are still notable spots left to plug on the roster.

The Cardinals will also have to fill those holes without picks No. 72 in the third round and No. 152 in the fifth round.

That leaves the Cardinals with two picks remaining for Day 2, Nos. 47 and 97, and three picks remaining on Day 3, Nos. 134, 182 and 254.

Arizona and general manager Steve Keim still needs to address holes at wide receiver and defensive back, with depth issues elsewhere as well.

The team could trade down to gain more picks in an attempt to fill these needs; Keim said nothing was off the table when asked on Doug & Wolf on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station on Friday.

“I think anything’s possible,” he said. “We could also trade up if we covet a player that much.”

There are still some notable pass-catchers available, such as local product Christian Kirk and SMU’s Courtland Sutton, and potential secondary help like Iowa’s Josh Jackson and Stanford’s Justin Reid also left on the board.

Gambo’s Five, which narrows down a list of players the Cardinals are pursuing in the draft, consists of three offensive linemen and two wide receivers who could be available for the team.

“Really, it’s a lot of ebbs and flows to the draft and it’s a feel thing, just like last year when we saw (safety) Budda (Baker) drop into the second round,” Keim said.

He wouldn’t divulge any plans.

“We’ll focus on us today,” Keim said. “I think at the 47th pick, we’re going to get one heck of a player if we stay put.”
