D-backs’ Robbie Ray exits game with strained right oblique in 2nd

Arizona Diamondbacks’ Robbie Ray exited Sunday’s contest against the Washington Nationals after he motioned toward his right side following a pitch.

In the middle of the second inning, Ray forced a groundout to the Nationals’ Michael A. Taylor but appeared uncomfortable as he stepped off the mound.

Ray exited the field with trainers after just 1.1 innings, allowing a single hit and striking out two batters.

The D-backs later announced that Ray had been diagnosed with a strained right oblique.

T.J. McFarland replaced Ray on the mound with one out in the second inning of a 0-0 ballgame.

That changed, however, when Washington’s Matt Wieters hit a solo shot to left center to give the Nationals the 1-0 lead.

Washington tacked on one more after McFarland was unable to handle a grounder with the bases loaded, increasing the lead to 2-0 heading into the third.

The D-backs would eventually fall to the Nationals 3-1.

Ray told reporters after the game that he hadn’t felt any tightness or soreness on his right side up until the pitch in the second inning.

“I felt great up until that one pitch,” Ray said. “I was probably in the middle of my delivery, I was letting go of the ball and just felt my side grab and I wasn’t able to finish the pitch and left it up and away. I just wasn’t able to get anything on it.”

The D-backs will find out the extent of the injury when Ray undergoes an MRI Monday, but D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said a trip to the DL is “likely”

“You guys obviously can assume that,” Lovullo said.
