PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks’ 19-8 start has been pretty remarkable. Historically so, in fact, since they’re the first National League team to open a season with nine straight series wins in 111 years.

It’s an even more impressive feat when you consider they’ve essentially done it without third baseman Jake Lamb, who has missed all but four games because of a left shoulder sprain.

He seems to be making progress towards a return, saying his arm felt good after throwing out to 120 feet on Monday. He took batting practice as well and was set to take some grounders.

“Tomorrow I think he’s going to try to incorporate a little bit more,” manager Torey Lovullo said prior to Monday’s contest with the Dodgers. “What that is depends on how he gets through today.”

On Thursday and Friday, Lamb participated in a full workout in Washington that included both throwing and hitting.

Lamb has five hits and five RBI in 18 at-bats this season. He was a huge part of the offense in 2017, finishing second on the team with 30 home runs and 105 RBI.

Lovullo also noted that right fielder Steven Souza Jr. threw out to 120 feet and took five at-bats in extended spring training on Monday and reiterated that starting pitcher Shelby Miller is ready to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. Souza is making his way back from a pectoral strain he suffered in spring training while Miller is coming off Tommy John surgery he had last May.
