D-backs’ Pollock has sprained left thumb after failed diving catch

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock exited Monday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers after failing to make a diving catch in center field.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said after the game that Pollock has a sprained left thumb. Pollock was being evaluated and will see a hand specialist on Tuesday.

“The trainer just recommended that we get him off the field. I’m going to follow what the trainer says,” Lovullo said. “He seemed to be giving decent feedback. … He (Pollock) wasn’t in a tremendous amount of pain, I do know that much.”

With one runner on and two outs in the ninth inning, the D-backs trailed 5-2.

Milwaukee’s Tyler Saladino hit a 1-1 pitch from Fernando Salas on a line to center.

Pollock dove for the ball and extended his arms but failed to make the catch.

When Pollock’s glove hand hit the field, his left wrist rolled up and his glove came off.

Pollock stayed down throughout the remainder of the play, flexing his left hand repeatedly.

Saladino would hit an inside-the-park home run on the play.

Pollock has had a career year in 2018. He was the National League’s Player of the Month in April and the following week was the NL’s Player of the Week.

On the season, the 30-year-old is hitting .293 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI. He is an unrestricted free agent after this season.

The D-backs have had to work through several injuries already this season. Starting pitcher Taijuan Walker is out for the season due to Tommy John surgery while third baseman Jake Lamb (shoulder) and starting pitcher Robbie Ray (oblique) are two key pieces from the 2017 roster currently working their way back from injuries. The team recently got back right fielder Steven Souza Jr., who they acquired from Tampa Bay last offseason.

Pollock potentially missing time would come at the worst point of the season for the D-backs to this point. Arizona has lost six straight games, and after holding the best record in the NL, they enter Tuesday’s action with only a 1.5-game lead over the Colorado Rockies in the NL West. The six-game losing streak is the team’s longest under Lovullo. In four of those six games, the D-backs have scored less than three runs.
