Al McCoy doesn’t see Suns parting with Nash

The voice of the Phoenix Suns Al McCoy is weighing in on the future of Steve Nash.

Nash’s age-defying performance against the New Orleans Hornets Wednesday — in which he broke the Suns’ franchise record for assists and dropped 30 points in the process — showed the two-time MVP is as dominant as ever.

So it’s no surprise that McCoy doesn’t envision the Suns parting with Nash anytime soon.

“As I’ve mentioned many times, I don’t know what the consideration would be if you were even thinking about trading Steve Nash because you’d have to really be able to get something fantastic to make that move right now,” McCoy told Arizona Sports 620’s Doug and Wolf Friday.

You can’t argue with that sentiment. Nash is leading the NBA in assists and is arguably one of the best true point guards in the NBA this season, in spite of the Suns’ troubles.

Nash’s play isn’t showing his mileage and McCoy believes he’s still on top of his game.

“His shots are fantastic, he’s moving the ball, doing a lot of positive things — he even had a blocked shot the other night in that game in New Orleans,” McCoy stated.

The Suns are 8-13 on the year and 4-6 in their last ten games entering Friday’s contest in Houston. This team is definitely in rebuilding mode — no doubt about it — and lacking the necessary talent to contend in the immediate future.

Still, McCoy believes the talk surrounding dealing Nash is premature.

“We’re not even halfway through this season and it’s (trading Nash) just a situation as I said where I think its conversation,” McCoy explained. “I can’t see anything ever culminating unless as I said, it would have to be something pretty fantastic, and I don’t see that on the horizon at all.”

It’s awfully hard to imagine that Nash will want to hang it up anytime soon — especially if he can stay healthy. So is it better to get the prospects for him now and set Nash free for a final chance to win? Or should he retire with the Suns, regardless of the team’s play around him?

One thing’s for certain: the Suns’ franchise star isn’t letting the team’s struggles — or the talk of trade rumors — dampen his spirit.

“Steve seems very happy to be in a Phoenix Suns uniform,” McCoy said
