PHOENIX SUNS

Don’t look for the Suns to make a trade this month

Most of the trade talk surrounding the Phoenix Suns is
centered around the idea of parting with Steve Nash, a
move
that would undoubtedly make the team worse this season.

But what about a deal to make the team better?

As a guest on Arizona Sports 620’s Doug and Wolf, Suns
President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby said he
doesn’t expect anything to happen with the roster.

“There could be opportunities to do something now, I don’t
predict there will be,” he said. “We’re in a position of
having some flexibility beginning in 2012; we don’t have a
lot of flexibility now.”

Teams like the idea of cap space, so the Suns could maybe
swing a deal that nets them a long-term contract in
exchange for one of their expiring deals. However, the
organization has openly discussed its plan to enter this
summer with enough cap space to sign some big free agents,
so chances are they’d rather not add anymore salary now.

“We’re not going to do anything that has a short-term
vista on it, it’s going to have to be something that makes
us better or creates an opportunity to make us better in
the long term and in the future,” Babby said.

The Suns are just 14-20, though, sitting four games out of
the final Western Conference playoff spot. It does not
sound like reinforcements are on the way, so any
improvement on what has thus far been an inconsistent
roster will have to come from within.
