Should the Cards have interest in Bernard Berrian?

PHOENIX – The Arizona Cardinals at 1-5 have all kinds of problems from lack of a pass rush, inexperienced secondary, struggling offensive line and Kevin Kolb trying to learn the offense.

However, not much has been made of their lack of a true number two wide receiver to take pressure off Larry Fitzgerald.

A potential solution may have emerged on Tuesday as the Minnesota Vikings released Bernard Berrian.

The Cardinals have gotten okay results from their complimentary wide-outs in Early Doucet and Andre Roberts, but Berrian is someone who can stretch the field with his speed forcing opposing defenses to pay attention to him.

Too often this season, quarterback Kevin Kolb seems locked on Larry Fitzgerald, which makes sense since Fitzgerald is the team’s best play-maker, but at the same time he’s constantly being double and triple teamed.

Another threat on the field in Berrian could potentially open up the offense for Kolb and give him another target he would be comfortable looking to which could in turn free Fitzgerald up to make more plays.

Berrian is clearly not the same player as he used to be making only seven catches for 91 yards this season in a minor role with the Vikings.

He was benched two games this season for failing to attend meetings making him a question mark if he would just bring more problems to Arizona’s locker room.

Yet, maybe a change of scenery could spark a resurgence in Berrian’s career and get him back to the form that produced 48 catches for 964 yards and seven touchdowns only a few years ago in 2008.

The Cardinals need help in many areas right now, but adding a speedster and deep threat in Berrian could help get the team’s offense on track.
