High school pitcher consoles friend before celebrating championship

High school sports often inspire great stories on and off the field.

A high school baseball section championship game in Minnesota last Wednesday helped show us the power of sportsmanship and friendship.

Mountain View high school pitcher Ty Koehn struck out Jack Kocon of Totino-Grace for the final out of the game, per Minnesota publication Bring Me The News. Instead of immediatley joining his teammates to celebrate, Koehn ran towards home plate and embraced Kocon.

“We are very close friends,” Koehn said to BMTN. “I knew him from all the way back when we were 13. We were on the same little league team. It was tough when we went to separate schools but we kept in touch.”

Koehn, a star player for Mountain View, wanted to make sure his friend knew that their friendship was more important than the outcome of the game.

Moutain View head coach Mark Downey told BMTN that Koehn’s compassion was exactly what he expected from his star player.

“Ty’s actions the other night do not surprise me and are reflective of what I expect from any one of the players on my team,” Downey wrote to BMTN in an emailed statement.
