Jarrod Dyson robs potential go-ahead grand slam in D-backs’ win

Jun 18, 2018, 10:31 PM | Updated: 11:58 pm

The Arizona Diamondbacks avoided what could have been a disastrous seventh inning thanks to a miraculous play by center fielder Jarrod Dyson.

Leading by three runs in the bottom of the seventh and the bases loaded, D-backs reliever Yoshihisa Hirano nearly gave up what would could have been a go-ahead grand slam by Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton.

But Dyson had other plans.

Using the wall, Dyson elevated and made the catch just above the yellow padding, leaving Upton stunned.

The Angels did manage to score a run on the play, but D-backs infielder Nick Ahmed pushed the lead back up to four runs the next inning with a solo home run, his 10th of the year.

But even before Dyson’s incredible, potentially game-saving play, the D-backs powered their way to an early lead over the Angels.

A two-run homer from Paul Goldschmidt in the top of the first, followed by a solo shot by Ketel Marte in the second gave the D-backs a 3-0 lead.

Jeff Mathis added a two-run double two innings later, followed by an RBI single from Dyson.

But back-to-back home runs off D-backs ace Zack Greinke — one of which from Upton — allowed the Angels to hang around before Dyson’s miraculous play in center field.

Greinke’s day ended after 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He also struck out five batters.

Despite giving up another run in the eighth, the D-backs managed to hold off the Angels and win by a score of 7-4.
