Maybe NFL players have forgotten the way running back David Johnson ravaged 2016 defenses.
Maybe they’re just showing respect to those who were healthy last year.
Either way, Johnson was left off the NFL Network’s Top 100 Players of 2018 list, as voted on by the players.
Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and defensive end Chandler Jones all made the top-30.
It seemed as though Johnson’s name would be called next.
He was No. 12 on the 2017 edition, and it’s unlikely his stock improved after being injured for all but part of the first game of the season.
But as the top-20 was announced and his name wasn’t called, it meant one of two things: either players remembered his 2016 season, in which he had more than 2,100 yards from scrimmage and scored 20 touchdowns, or they no longer considered him a top back after his wrist injury.
It was the latter.
The top 10 players:
- Tom Brady, QB, Patriots
- Antonio Brown, WR, Steelers
- Carson Wentz, QB, Eagles
- Julio Jones, WR, Falcons
- Le’Veon Bell, RB, Steelers
- Todd Gurley, RB, Rams
- Aaron Donald, DT, Rams
- Drew Brees, QB, Saints
- Von Miller, LB, Broncos
- Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers
Johnson was ranked No. 21 on CBS’ power rankings, but he didn’t make Pro Football Focus’ list of the top 50 NFL players.
