The Arizona Diamondbacks made their second trade of the regular season on Wednesday to improve the roster ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.

The D-backs acquired right-handed pitcher Matt Andriese from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for two minor league prospects, catcher Michael Perez and right-handed pitcher Brian Shaffer.

Andriese is a 28-year-old pitcher that will most likely serve a similar role as the recently departed Randall Delgado, who was designated for assignment to make room for Andriese on the roster.

“What we were getting was a young man who gives us four years of control,” D-backs president and CEO Derrick Hall said on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Doug & Wolf. “He’s already proven that he can be in a big league bullpen and can be a very effective reliever.”

Andriese has been a versatile pitcher throughout his short big league career. He has started 48 of his 99 career games.

The acquisition of Andriese is also a long-term move for the team, as he enters his first year of arbitration after this season. This is important for the D-backs as their farm system lacks high-upside talent throughout the minor league levels.

4.30

Andriese’s career ERA in four seasons with the Rays.

.174

The batting average of left-handed hitters against Andriese in 2018. With strong left-handed bats in the NL West like Charlie Blackmon, Max Muncy, Carlos Gonzalez and Brandon Belt, Andriese will serve an important role in the D-backs bullpen.

.285

Andriese’s batting average against right-handed hitters. With three other left-handed pitchers in the bullpen, it was surprising to see the team part with Delgado and his .222 opponent’s batting average against right-handed bats.

46.1

The percent of Andriese’s pitches that are fastballs.

41.2

The percent of changeups that Andriese has thrown this season. Andriese has increased the usage of his changeup every year, including last season when he threw it 27.7 percent of the time. His changeup has become his go-to pitch, as he’s stopped throwing his cutter.

8.9

Andriese is striking out a career high of 8.9 hitters per nine innings.

50.6

Andriese’s ground ball percentage this season. He has increased his ground ball rate every year of his career.

4.65

Andriese has struggled to pitch away from Tropicana Field this season where his ERA is 3.45. His ERA may improve moving to a new league and pitching in the NL West that features more pitcher-friendly ballparks compared to the AL East.
