Humphries’ hot takes: Going 1-on-1 vs. Jones, rookies know their snacks

A day after Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks noticed some “inconsistencies” in Arizona’s practice, the team put on their pads for the first time Monday to let their full fury out.

Wilks gathered the troops at midfield and put his linemen in one-on-one drills. Of course, the most intriguing of such battles came when the 2017 NFL sack leader Chandler Jones went toe-to-toe with left tackle D.J. Humphries.

“That was fun, man,” Humphries told Bickley & Marotta on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station afterward. “Let me tell you something. When I play football, I try to find someone to compete with, and that’s Chandler for me. You look up and practice (is) over because we out there trying to have fun. This dude that I’m really good friends with, we laugh and joke all day, and now it’s time for us to play football. Now I want to beat you.

“There’s another 20 guys doing the same thing. And it’s just out here, high energy and having fun.”

Humphries’ other hot takes

On quarterback Sam Bradford: “Sam is a freak. I think people forget about how he was running the show around there (in St. Louis). When you watch him go, you see it. That was the first pick of the draft for a reason. That wasn’t an accident, that (expletive) didn’t just happen. That’s that dude right there.

“Calm, cool and collected. Big chill. Will let us know what we got to do. All that rah-rah, all that yappy-yappy, Sam ain’t got none of that for you.”

On worrying about his recovery from a dislocated kneecap and MCL injury: “I had the most traumatic experience I’ve ever had happen to me on Thanksgiving weekend a year ago and I haven’t thought about it since.”

On how rookie offensive linemen Mason Cole and Korey Cunningham are doing: “Those are some good rookies as well. Their snacks are amazing, by the way. Like the snacks they got us for the O-line room.

“Oh my God, (they stocked it with) everything. I mean, it was just a wide array of things from chips to dip. They’ve been doing a great job since OTAs. They came in on their first shipment, I was like, ‘you guys are legit. I appreciate you guys. Rookie dinner might not be that bad.'”

On his perspective of RB David Johnson’s minicamp holdout as he awaits a contract extension: “From my eyes, I was really excited to see him stand up for what he believed in. Knowing the type of guy David is — David is a sweetheart. David is a great dude. Him holding out, he didn’t want to have to do that. That’s just his personality.

“For him to take his business that serious, I was very impressed. He did that and I like that about him. He was able to put how he is aside to understand like, hey, this is a business. You’ve earned what you’re asking for.”
