D-backs’ Robbie Ray relieved young fan is OK after pregame incident

Aug 5, 2018, 6:15 PM | Updated: 7:23 pm

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Robbie Ray’s main concern prior to Sunday’s loss to the Giants had little to do with his performance on the mound.

Prior to the game, Ray was long-tossing with catcher John Ryan Murphy, when a ball sailed and hit a boy in the head.

“If he wouldn’t have been alright I don’t know how I would’ve went out there and pitched today,” Ray said. “So big thanks to him.”

Fortunately, the young fan was OK.

Ray said the boy, Nolan, was “maybe 4 or 5 years old.” The young fan didn’t shed a tear.

“He took it like a warrior and shrugged it off,” Ray said.

After the minor incident, both Ray and Murphy went up to Nolan and gave him a signed bat and made sure the child was OK.
