Arizona State senior safety Tyler Whiley is out for the season due to a foot injury he suffered in the team’s scrimmage on Saturday, SunDevilSource.com confirmed on Monday.

ASU head coach Herm Edwards said the team was excited with Whiley’s progress in the offseason and that he was competing for a starting position.

“You hate for a player to lose a whole season due to injury,” Edwards said on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Bickley & Marotta. “We’re gonna have to recover, and for him, he was really coming on. He was doing a nice job.”

Whiley was listed as a wide receiver last season, appearing in all 13 games as a redshirt junior on special teams. He blocked a punt against Oregon on Sept. 23.

“Hopefully he’s gonna recover well and we’ll see if he’ll be able to play some more for us down the road,” Edwards said. “From there, we’ve just gotta move on and put other guys in (a) position where they’re gonna have to play.”

Whiley was running with the first team in Saturday’s scrimmage, playing the hybrid “Tillman” position.

“It will be a good teaching point for those guys to learn because to be honest Tyler has been one of our emotional leaders, he’s been really good with those guys so it was a big loss emotionally tonight which we need to overcome,” ASU defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales said after Saturday’s scrimmage.
