Northern Arizona sent waves around the Arizona sports world when the Lumberjacks’ football team took down an FBS opponent in UTEP last weekend. The school also announced Thursday that its new LED video display will debut this weekend when the Lumberjacks host Eastern Washington at the Skydome.

The NAU athletic department teamed up with Anthony James Partners and Daktronics for the displays, which will debut at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome Saturday.

According to an NAU Athletics press release, the north end zone of the Skydome will feature a high-definition screen, measuring 42 feet by 24 feet, with two auxiliary displays for scoring, statistics and other information.

The south end zone will feature two high-definition displays, both measuring 37.7 feet by 21.5 feet, and one central display for scoring and messaging. This display, however, will likely not be ready until NAU’s homecoming game against Cal Poly on Oct. 27.

In the press release, NAU Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mike Marlow said these improvements will make the Skydome one of the premier atmospheres in FCS football.

“NAU Athletics is proud to present these amazing improvements to the Skydome that will increase the overall experience for our fans beginning this football season,” Marlow said. “The cutting edge technology and state-of-the art branding, provided by Daktronics and Anthony James Partners, will position the Skydome as one of the most enjoyable fan experiences in the Big Sky Conference and FCS.”

Northern Arizona has used the Walkup Skydome since 1977, and the school currently uses the facility for football, men’s and women’s basketball, and indoor track and field. The dome can hold up to 10,000 spectators, and is just one of 11 domed stadiums in the entire NCAA.

NAU enters week two with a 1-0 record, and the Lumberjacks have 10 games remaining on the schedule, five of which will be played at the Skydome.
