The Arizona Cardinals have signed rookie kicker Matt McCrane to their practice squad on Friday, three days after he was released by the Oakland Raiders.
To sign McCrane, Arizona released offensive lineman Kyle Friend.
McCrane, who went undrafted out of Kansas State, spent the preseason with Arizona and was released on Sept. 1.
Veteran kicker Phil Dawson held off McCrane to win the Cardinals’ starting kicker role heading into the regular season and has converted 3 of 5 attempts. The 43-year-old missed practice on Thursday with a right hip injury.
McCrane joined the Raiders on Sept. 26 and appeared in three games, hitting all five extra point attempts and going 5-of-9 on field goals. McCrane went 0-for-2 from 50 or more yards and 2-of-4 from 40-49 yards. He hit all three attempts from 20-29 yards out.
His longest make was from 44 yards out.
Playing for the Cardinals in the preseason, McCrane hit all four field goal attempts he took with longs of 54 and 53 yards.
