Larry Fitzgerald still able to impress Whisenhunt

Nov 15, 2011, 12:07 AM | Updated: 3:00 am

Heading into Sunday’s matchup against the Philadelphia
Eagles, Larry Fitzgerald had 38 catches, 646 yards and
three touchdown catches. Pedestrian-like numbers for the
future hall of famer.

But the lack of production was never blamed on anything
Fitzgerald was doing or not doing; fans knew he was ready
to break out any game.

The Eagles were victims of Fitzgerald’s biggest game of
the season, and that led to an upset victory and the
Cardinals first road win in 11 games.

“In the time that we’ve been here, some of the plays that
Larry has made have been unbelievable,” head coach Ken
Whisenhunt said on Arizona Sports 620’s Doug and Wolf.
“Every once in a while you see these things that even
amaze you more and how he took over that game and made
some plays for us when we needed him to make plays is why
he is the best receiver in the game.”

The big numbers–seven catches, 146 yards and two scores–
only begin to tell the story of the impact Fitzgerald had
on the victory.

“That play in the fourth quarter where almost scored on
third down, you know you have to give John [Skelton]
credit, that was a good throw, but the catch…to run that
way he did and make that catch — which is tough over your
head — is just incredible,” Whisenhunt said.

Losing and poor quarterback play have been known to bring
out the worst in NFL wide receivers, but Fitzgerald has
maintained his status as a leader in the locker room for
better or worse this season.

“We’re very fortunate to have Larry not only because he is
a great player but because of his leadership, because of
the way he works and what a great teammate he is.”
